The Miami Dolphins…One of the Most Exciting Teams in NFL History

On September 2, 1966, the Miami Dolphins made their debut as a professional NFL football team. They are the oldest professional sports franchise in Florida and have a large following of fans.

In 1970, the team made it to the playoffs for the first time and in 1971, they made their first appearance in the Super Bowl. Although they lost to the Cowboys that year, the Dolphins did not lose heart. They went to the Super Bowl the very next year and won against the Washington Redskins.

Since then, they have been in three more Super Bowls, losing twice and winning once. They have also hosted four previous Super Bowls and are slated to host the 2010 game as well as the Pro Bowl a few days before.

Of course, the Miami Dolphins are involved in their community. Like many other teams, they are dedicated to helping children achieve a brighter future. They have partnered with local libraries to encourage children to read, promote physical activity to fight childhood obesity, and provide scholarships for outstanding students in the local high schools. They are also involved in many other charities, and make frequent visits to hospitals to cheer up patients.

The Miami Dolphins cheerleaders have been around as long as the team. Originally a team of 125, only 48 girls danced at each game. They wore one-piece bathing suits and go-go boots, performing Broadway-style routines. Over time, the team has evolved into the fantastic group that is today’s cheerleaders. Training is rigorous, and only the most dedicated can make it onto the team. These women not only perform at games and special events, but are also involved in community projects, and occasionally perform for the troops overseas.

Although the Miami Dolphins initially started out playing in the Orange Bowl, in 1987 they moved to their new home, Joe Robbie Stadium. The stadium has been renamed several times and used to be known as the Land Shark Stadium, and is now named Sun Life Stadium.

With a seating capacity during football games of 75,540, the stadium features a club level with air conditioning and exclusive bars and restaurants. Recent renovations in 2007 have made the stadium one of the most technologically advanced and comfortable in the league.

The Miami Dolphins are more than just a team to Florida. They are a tradition to be proud of. The players and cheerleaders are all involved, upstanding role models for today’s youth, and they put on a good show. For decades, they have contributed to the culture and community and 2010 will be no different.
